どこのゴルファーも一緒で、ゴルフには賭けが付き物です。アメリカで最も普及しているゲームはナッソーですが、特に、Four Ball Game といって４人でやるマッチプレーに人気があります。以下の英語説明をご覧下さい。

A four ball game is a form of match play. Two players from one team compete against two players of the other. All four players play their own ball through the entire course. At the end of each hole, the best score of the two on Team A is compared to the best score of the two on Team B to determine which team wins the hole. After 18 holes, the team which won the most holes wins the match.

つまり、二人のBest Ball でのナッソー（Nassau）が Four Ball Game ということになります。ナッソーを英語で説明すると以下のようになります。
There are a variety of nassau games. But in its most fundemental form, nassau is match play between two golfers (or teams) where the front nine holes are played as one match, the back nine holes are played as a second match and all 18-holes are considered a third match.

アマチュアプレーヤー同士のゲームは、基本的に、フルハンデベースで行われます。自分のハンデホールでは、"I got a stroke." など "stroke" という単語を使います。他にも、"shot" とか、品のない表現では "blow" などという単語も使われます。いずれにせよ、ローハンデの人を基準に他のプレーヤーのハンデが決まり、"You give me three strokes." などと言えば、ハンデを３枚下さい、ということになります。

さて、4ボールのゲームで２ダウンすると負けているチームは、プレスといって、日本で言う別列車の賭けが並行して始まります。普通、$5 か $10 のナッソーが一般的で、$5-$5-$5 のナッソーであれば、5-Dollar 3-Way というように言います。従って、プレスでの勝ち負けを入れて 5-Way の勝ちだとか 3-Way の負けだとかいった様に表現します。また、二アピン(Greenie と言う）やバーティー、総称して、Ｊunk という、に $1 から $5 程度の賞金をかけるのも一般的。

ところで、マッチプレーに対して、ストロークプレー（Stroke Play）がありますが、ストロークプレーのことをメダルプレー（Medal Play）とも言います。なお、マッチプレーで相手にＯＫをして、そのホールの負けを認める場合 forfeit （発音）とか concede （発音）などいう単語を使います。覚えておくと良いでしょう。
